In Their Own Words

Letters from Cagayan de Oro city, the Philippines
"I stopped studying due to financial problem because my father had never supported us since he went to Manila to look for a job. Only my mother took care of us. She sent me to school. I studies hard to achieve my goals that's why I received many awards. But when I finished my grade V level, she told me that it's hard for her to enroll me for the next grade. I pity myself because I was excited to graduate from the elementary. The next year was the same, not enough money to send me to school.
One day in July, my mother's friend told her that there is a literacy center near their house. My mother enrolled me there. I really enjoyed being in that school. Ms Joji Bliss Sun, my teacher taught well the students. She's very kind and intelligent and my classmates were also all very good. It was a long travel from my house to the school but I loved going everyday. My teacher told me I have to pass 2 exams for acceleration and I passed both. I had to go to another place called Kabula which was very far to review every Saturday but its ok. I have a dream of finishing school and studying. With all the help of the teachers at the literacy center, we were prepared for the big day. They took care even of our breakfast and lunch on the day of the exam.
Last March 26, 2007 was our recognition day. I received an award as second Honor and I was so happy and proud. The next day was our summer camp. I have never been so happy as the experience of the summer camp. It is unforgettable for me.
Then last June 15, we had graduation from the A & E. We wore the "toga", the gown worn by those who graduate. I was so very happy!!! And all my teachers were there and they gave us good lunch after. Again, I did not know it will happen. I am very thankful to the Lord for making all these things to me and to the I.Can who gave us the fund.
Now, I am happily enrolled at Consolacion High School. I am very confident that I will make good. I hope my mother will have enough money to support me so I can finish high school." Atezia Antonette Leonor
"When I enrolled at Sto Nino Literacy Center I have less learning, but in two years time, I learned many things and I feel more ready. Now that I have started as a high school student at the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School, I have become a fast learner and I can easily grasp the lesson well."
Amy Palason
"I did not even know how to write my name when I began at the Sto Nino Literacy Center. With the help of Teacher Leonor, I learned not only how to write my name but also many other words.I can even write faster now.I am so happy and grateful." Nimpha Bodiongan
"I am very thankful to Teacher Leonor and the rest of the staff and to I.Can as well for giving us the opportunity to go to school.I learned how to read well in Filipino and English. Now that I am enrolled at the East City Central School, I have no difficulty in Reading." John Kenneth Labadisos
Letters from Fortaleza, Brazil
"My name is Valmir, I am 13 years old and I'm in the 7th grade. The library is a leisure time. I like to come to the library because it takes me out of the streets. There we can read, play and draw. I like "capoeira", drawing and studying. My dream is to work as a fireman because firemen save people's lives". Valmir, 13 years old
"I think the library is cool and fun. What I most like is learning how to make beautiful bracelets with teacher Beverly, she is the best, I love her. I also like Stela and Elenir. I love to see the children having fun, reading and doing activities at the library. I love to see the children's joyful and happy smiles, I am happy to see the children are happy at the libraries". Brena, 14 years old
"My name is Valeria Lopes Monteiro. I've known the library for some time and I've been part of it, now I just come to visit. I believe the library is a wonderful space for the children because they can learn many educational activities. The best of the libraries for the children is when there are parties, rides etc. When I used to come to the libraries I loved the relaxation and the snacks. The message I'd like to leave for the children is that they should value what they have, especially this wonderful place called BIBLIOTECA CASA DA DORINA". Valeria
"As Estefani's mom I noticed an improvement in terms of reading ability, because she didn't use to like reading but now she rents books and participates in the activities, she's not as shy as she used to be. Because of the library Estefani now likes the English language, she can count from one to ten in English even when she's sleeping! This is a result of the visit of a Canadian group that came to help the libraries last year. She also develops group work, with the help of the monitors. The library is very important for the community and for the children that make part of the reading mediation. I really want to thank this international group that worries about the education of our children in Brazil." Toinha, mother
"Hello, my name is Geizilane, I am 10 years old. I'm part of the Biblioteca Mary Mona Kelly and I love it. This library is like my second home and I thank you for teaching me and helping me. This library was made with love for the all the children in Brazil." Geizilane, 10 years old
