Terra Prometida – Biblioteca Comunitaria Casa Da Dorina
This Little Library was named in memory of Doreen Wicks, a founder of the I.Can Foundation. It opened in 2004 and is located in one of the most impoverished areas of Fortaleza.
In addition to literacy lessons, the children also have opportunities to learn about dance, music and art as part of the experience of visiting the Little Library. Staff at the Little Library also help the children and their families who visit, with access to other services such as medical attention. The staff are also provided with professional development opportunities in order to upgrade their teaching skills.
Sao Paulo
Sao Paulo is located in southeastern Brazil and with a population of 18 million is the world's third most populous metropolitan area. São Paulo is the financial and industrial centre of Brazil. São Paulo also has a disproportionate number of poor people. It's estimated that between 60%-70% of the population lives below the poverty level.
Biblioteca Sao Jose This Little Library was established in 2006 in partnership with the Canadian International Women's Society (CIWS), a volunteer organization of 100 expatriate women living in Sao Paulo. The CIWS(www.ciws.com.br) for over 40 years has been providing financial support to local charities.
The Little Library is located in the Casa San Jose Community centre(www.casadoidoso.org.br) which was founded by the CIWS. Over 3000 families have access the community center. Several hundred children are visiting each month. There are currently over 2,000 books in the Little Library The I.Can Foundation and CIWS are working with the Board of the Casa San Jose Community Center to provide financial assistance for the acquisition of new books and computer based learning programs.
