"I was introduced to words at an early age. Both of my parents worked for newspapers. The house was full of them. So I began my love affair with the printed word. The news section? No, the comics page. From this beginning, I progressed to wild adventure stories. Reading had become a way of sharing my dreams with my buddies. But more than anything else, reading is about learning. Learning is about writing and understanding new things. It's about being able to reach the stars."Ben Wicks

Ben believed that every child, regardless of race, nationality, gender or economic status deserved the right to learn how to read and write.

In 1995, he developed the Born to Read series, a collection of six practical literacy guides for families and educators which was the largest family literacy program ever deliverd in Canada.

In 1999, Ben and his wife, Doreen established the I.Can Foundation which would be dedicated to providing poor children around the world with materials and services to enable them to become literate.

First, Ben's successful Born to Read series was converted to an online version which continues to be a resource for teachers.

In 2002, Doreen Wicks implemented the second initiative, the Little Libraries program. Little Libraries are located in developing communities where, for a variety of reasons, poor children are not regularly attending a public school. Every Little Library is a free, safe and nurturing place where, with the help of educators, every child is learning to read and write.

Sadly, Ben and Doreen have passed away, but their vision, passion and spirit to help needy children to learn to read and write continues with the I.Can Foundation.
