Our Founders

Over forty years ago, Ben and Doreen Wicks emigrated from the United Kingdom as a young married couple with modest financial resources but with dreams for a bright future in Canada. Over the years, their family grew to include three children and Ben built a successful career as an outstanding cartoonist and author. In addition, Ben and Doreen became committed to helping those who were in need.

Over 20 years ago, Doreen Wicks established an organization called Gems of Hope, an organization that delivers sustainable community and health programs to more than fifty economically deprived nations. She worked in Liberia, Haiti, Brazil, Uganda and Jamaica.

For their individual accomplishments as exemplary Canadians, Ben and Doreen were each awarded the Order of Canada which distinguishes them as the only married couple to have ever received the country's highest civilian honor.
